Required level of readiness (any prior experiences or level of training required for applicants):

Advanced third year or fourth year doctoral candidates in a clinical or school-clinical psychology program are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have previous clinical experience providing cognitive behavioral therapy and testing.

Preferred level of readiness(any prior experiences preferred for applicants):

Applicants should have prior experience conducting CBT with children, adolescents, adults and families. Experience or interest in DBT is preferred but not required.

Interview Information:


Initial Interviews will be 30 minutes with the Training Director and Externship Coordinator on:

January 27th, 2017 8:30am-5:00pm


Some applicants may be asked to return to interview with Dr. McGinn and/or Dr. Miller for a second interview on February 10th, 2017 from 8:00-11:00am.

Description of Externship


Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants invites applicants for a pre-doctoral externship beginning in July 2017. CBC is a private group practice founded by Drs. Lata McGinn and Alec Miller, both of whom are internationally renowned experts in their respective fields of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).


CBC is comprised of a group of highly skilled clinicians who utilize evidence-based therapy to treat children, adolescents, adults, families and couples. Clinicians at CBC have been intensively trained in CBT and DBT, and have expertise in the treatment of a wide range of disorders.


CBC offers a warm and supportive atmosphere in which externs receive comprehensive training and supervision from highly trained supervisors. Based on their interests and/or prior experiences, externs will have the opportunity to conduct individual, family, and couples therapy, as well as parent training using CBT and DBT modalities. In addition, externs who have previous experience with CBT and DBT, may have the opportunity to complete a neuropsychological testing rotation (including Executive Functioning Coaching). Externs have the opportunity to co-lead DBT and CBT groups with highly trained therapists/supervisors. Externs will receive individual, peer, and group CBT supervision, dyadic DBT supervision, as well as attend weekly didactic seminars on topics related to CBT and DBT.

Depending upon the extern’s interests or prior experience, there may be an opportunity to co-facilitate DBT skills groups, and attend DBT team meetings, and have an individual DBT case.

Externs will carry up to 8 maximum individual cases and co-lead 1-2 CBT or DBT group(s).

Supervision:

Estimated hours/week of individual supervision: 1-2 hrs/week with primary supervisor
Estimated hours/week of group supervision: 1 hr weekly peer supervision with CBC staff and post-doctoral fellows.
Estimated hours/week of didactics: 1 hr/week of didactic seminars on CBT and DBT, as well as monthly grand round lectures and monthly CBT consultation team.
