Dr. Goldstein is a graduate of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University, a former Postdoctoral Fellow at the NYUMC Child Study Center, a former psychologist of the Child Mind Institute, and former Clinical Assistant Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine. He is currently the leader of ABCT's Child Anxiety Special Interest Group and an Associate Editor of the Behavior Therapist journal. This growing practice provides individual attention that may be lacking at larger institutions given the size of the practice.

General Information

An extern is sought for a warm private practice setting which serves children, teens, and adults with anxiety disorders (including Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder, Social Phobia, Panic Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Selective Mutism) as well as mood disorders (including Major Depression and Dysthymia). Moreover, the practice also treats patients with ADHD, mild ASD, and behavioral disorders. Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is used to treat younger children (ages 3 to 7) with ODD. The practice utilizes evidence-based treatments, primarily CBT, CBIT, and PCIT to treat these conditions. Treatment case opportunities is dependent upon the needs of those seeking treatment at the practice.

Description of Externship

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Individual Psychotherapy: Responsibilities include carrying a caseload of 4-8 individual therapy or co-therapy cases with children, teens, and adolescents presenting with a variety of anxiety, mood, ADHD, and/or behavioral disorders, as well as assisting with in vivo exposures, school observations, and other "special projects" (e.g. intensive treatments, habit reversal therapy).
  • Training in, and delivery of, evidence-based treatments: Externs will be trained in evidence-based treatments Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for anxiety and will receive exposure to PCIT. To address certain comorbidities, other evidence-based treatments may be implemented (e.g., habit reversal therapy to address tics).
  • Co-Therapy: Externs often participate as observers and co-therapist with experienced clinician in assessment and treatment sessions.
  • Assessment: Externs may participate in psychiatric evaluations and feedback sessions. They will be expected first to shadow one or more evaluations conducted by Dr. Goldstein.
