Description of Externship
Description of Externship
A minimum of two and maximum of four externs are selected each year. The Adult-Track externship requires a minimum of two days (16 hours) per week. Externs who have completed all required academic coursework may opt to add an additional 1/2 day (4 hours) for a total of 20 hours per week, provided they receive approval from their Doctoral Program.
Externs complete two major assignments during the year: A mandatory 1/2 year placement on an adult inpatient psychiatric unit and a second 1/2 year placement selected from a list of optional training experiences.
Unit placement and elective assignments are made by the Director of Externship Training, with decisions based on trainee interest, training needs and supervisor availability. In addition to the selected placements, externs are required to co-lead at least one year-long psychotherapy group (inpatient or outpatient) and perform psychodiagnostic evaluations.
