Description of Externship

The Kingsbrook externship program consists of supervised training experiences with inpatient and outpatient populations. Externs perform neuropsychological and psychological evaluations and offer individual psychotherapy. The primary focus of the externship is neuropsychological evaluation and treatment on the acute rehabilitation inpatient TBI Unit and on the General Rehabilitation Unit. They also evaluate patients on the inpatient adult and geriatric psychiatric units. Externs primarily work with multicultural patients who have survived acquired brain injuries (traumatic injuries as well as vascular and neurological conditions). Externs will learn to conduct neuropsychology screens and battery assessments on adults ranging from young adults through the geriatric population. They will also acquire and use cognitive retraining skills.
