Scheduling; Two full days per week for 8.5 hours per day. The days are flexible.

Required level of readiness: The preferred applicant will have previous experience in clinical assessment, scoring, and interpreting psychological tests. A 3rd year student is preferred but 2nd year students with relevant experience in a clinical or forensic settings will be considered.

==Description of Externship==

Mid Hudson Forensic Psychiatric Center is a maximum security forensic psychiatric hospital under the auspices of the NYS Office of Mental Health. The hospital is located in Orange County, New York and serves as a liaison between the legal and mental health systems by providing mental health services to individuals with a wide range of diagnoses. Some of our patients are referred by various court systems throughout New York State. Patients are admitted to the hospital for the purposes of restoring them to competency to assist in their legal defense. (CPL 730) Other patients are referred to MHFPC after their being deemed not responsible for a given crime by virtue of " mental disease or defect " and are thus deemed dangerously mentally ill. (CPL 330.20) The Commissioner of Mental Health may also refer patients who are in a civil hospital but require a secure environment for treatment due to their behavior.(Part 57)
The hospital consists of 18 units and provides services to approximately 270 patients. There are two units that provide treatment to both males and females. We also have an Acute Care Ward for short term medical problems and a ward that provides intensive treatment for patients who are having diffculties functioning on the other units. This unit's goal is to provide treatment that will enable the patient to regular programning.
The extern will be assigned to at least one unit and be supervised by the licensed psychologist on that unit. The extern will be a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and will attend morning rounds, treatment planning meetings, and complete psychological assessments. The extern will also have the opportunity to observe forensic evaluations and work with the licensed psychologist in completing risk assessments and forensic reports. The extern will also have the opportunity to observe court proceedings.
An extern will also have to complete the same training that is require for all employees. This is a two day training that outline the policies and procedures needed to work in a maximum security facility.


The hospital can easily be reached by car from either Interstate 84 at Exit 3 or from Route 17
