Our externship functions like a "mini internship." We require students to be here 2 1/2 days per week. Tuesdays are required. We have some felxibility on other day externs can be here, however we do not have externs on site on Fridays.

Required level of readiness (any prior experiences or level of training required for applicants):

Given the high risk population we treat, externs must be entering at least 4th year of graduate school and have prior therapy experience.

Expected number of cases seen at any one time:

Externs will treat patients in both our Adolescent Depression and Suicide Program (ADSP) and in our Child Outpatient Psychiatry Department (COPD). Case assignments are as follows:
  • 1 DBT patient that involves beeper coverage and participation in a DBT consultation team
  • 4-5 child/adolescent patients (ages 5-17) presenting with a braod range of anxiety, mood, trauma, OCD, ADHD, DMDD, disruptive behavrios, and associated disorders. Externs may elect to be assigned one patient presenting with an eating disorder as part of our newly launched Eating Disorders Program at Montefiore.
    • Externs will receive comprehensive training in DBT, CBT, Trauma focused CBT for PTSD, Parent Management Training, and Exposure and Response Prevention
  • Conduct 8-10 comprehensive diagnostic intakes using ADIS.
  • Co-lead 1-2 groups
  • OPTIONAL -- externs may elect to conduct 2-3 psychological testing batteries.



Assessment training experiences commonly offered:


In prior years, our externs have completed 2-3 complete testing batteries. Given the significant time it takes to thoroughly complete these testing batteries, we will no longer be offering this as part of the main externship experience. Externs who would like this experience are welcome to do choose this as an elective, however the expectation will be that time testing would not be considered a part of the normal externship hours (16-20 hours per week).
