The Mount Sinai Epilepsy Center, N.Y., N.Y. is recruiting doctoral-level externs interested in a two-day-a-week placement focused on clinical neuropsychological assessment and research. Trainees will predominantly specialize in the evaluation of outpatients with epilepsy across the lifespan; participation in special procedures, such as Wada testing and intra/extra-operative functional language mapping will also be an integral part of the training experience.
In addition to working with individuals with epilepsy, externs will have the opportunity for supervised testing experiences with children and adults with breast cancer, chromosomal/congenital disorders, AD/HD, learning disorders, autoimmune encephalitis, and various other neurological sequeale. Interested bilingual students will also be given the opportunity to learn Spanish-language assessment measures and receive supervision by Spanish-speaking faculty, if desired.
Approximately 20-25% of the placement will focus on the treatment of individuals with neuromedical disorders. Participating in individual and group cognitive remediation treatment sessions will be a significant component of the training experience.
Multi-disciplinary surgical conference, Grand Rounds, brain cutting and journal club(s) occur weekly at Mount Sinai Medical Center; release time will be provided to facilitate extern attendance. Externs will also attend a weekly Neuropsychology didactic and daily "morning meeting" during which multiple different patient populations and neuromedical disorders will be discussed. Additionally, multiple research studies (i.e., WTC First Responders, breast cancer patients, urea cycle disorders, electrocorticography, clinical trials and others) are being conducted that provide opportunities for extern involvement, if desired.
Interested applicants should send a cover letter detailing their coursework, specific clinical experiences in neuropsychology, and interest in working with the populations served by this training site. A recent curriculum vitae, two letters of recommendation, and a neuropsychological test report are requested. Please ensure that the report has been carefully de-identified. Any report that has not been fully deidentified will be returned to the student. Please note that an application sent in a single PDF format is strongly preferred
