ADHD & Behavior Disorders Special Combined Externship General Information

The Selective Mutism Program of the Child Study Center and The Institute for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders seek graduate students to complete a year-long Special Combined Externship in delivering treatments for children with ADHD who have Organizational Skills Deficits, for children with Selective Mutism, and for children with varied disorders (in the New Jersey office). There will be extern positions available at our New Jersey office located in Hackensack, New Jersey, and at our New York City campus, located near the main campus of the NYU Medical Center. In New York, Richard Gallagher, Ph.D. – the Director of Special Projects within the Institute for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders and Co-Director of the Selective Mutism Program will be the primary supervisor. In New Jersey, Dr. Gallagher and Justin Misurell, Ph.D., the Clinical Director of the New Jersey Campus, will be supervisors.

ADHD & Behavior Disorders Special Combined Externship Description

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Behavioral Psychotherapy:All externs will be involved in providing clinical interventions created and advanced at the NYU Child Study Center. Externs will learn and deliver Organizational Skills Treatment for children with ADHD. Work with elementary school students and extensions of this intervention for older students are also provided. Externs will also learn to deliver treatment for selective mutism. Furthermore, training opportunities for delivering Game-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for childhood anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders will be provided. All interventions involve extensive opportunities to work with individuals, their families, and professionals in their schools.
  • Evaluation and Testing The positions incorporate psycho-diagnostic and neuropsychological evaluations. Patient populations include persons with anxiety disorders, with ADHD with comorbid learning problems and with learning disorders. Externs will participate in intakes and feedback relevant to these testing cases.
  • Seminars/Didactics:Externs are welcome to attend the seminars and the case conferences that are held at the NYU Child Study Center locations.
  • School Visits: Externs are invited to attend monthly school visits in which we are educated about specialized programs throughout the city. Opportunities for classroom observations to supplement the clinical evaluation may also be available.

Non-Clinical Responsibilities

  • Weekly individual and group supervision for cases
  • Possible Attendance at Weekly Case Conference
  • Possible Attendance at Weekly Grand Rounds (Fridays 11:00AM-12:15PM)
  • Participation in seminars and other education opportunities


The extern will receive training in cognitive-behavioral case conceptualization. With the guidance and support of a staff psychologist, the extern will prepare a case presentation to present at a team meeting. Case presentations usually consist of a conceptualization, brief literature review, and overview of the treatment approach. This practice exercise aims to help prepare students for advanced training requirements of internship. Externs can also assist in presentations given to the NYU academic community, as well as to local community organizations and professional groups.

Research (Optional):

Opportunities may arise for externs to participate in clinical research projects that are being conducted by staff psychologists.

Time Requirement:

Two full days per week will be required. For each office the extern must arrange a schedule to be available for the following options: Monday-Wednesday, Monday-Thursday, Tuesday-Thursday, Tuesday-Friday, or Wednesday-Friday. One of these schedules is required to deliver the Organizational Skills Training Program.
