Specific Externship Track Description

New York Presbyterian - Westchester Division Track 5: Child/Adolescent/Young Adult Anxiety Disorders Track

Number of Positions: 2-3

Track description: New York Presbyterian Hospital--Westchester Division is offering an externship track focused on the delivery and investigation of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies for children, adolescents, young adults, and their families. Externs will be exposed to existing and innovative new CBTs and their delivery in inpatient and outpatient settings. There will also be opportunities for interested externs to be involved in related clinical research. Externs are encouraged to attend didactic seminars available on their scheduled training days as well as inpatient meetings and clinical rounds. Together with their faculty mentors (MHF or MS), externs will develop a training plan that is tailored to their learning goals. Based on their learning goals, externs will be primarily matched with Dr. Hughes or Dr. Specht. Externs rotating with Dr. Hughes will focus on inpatient work on the child and/or adolescent units. Externs rotating with Dr. Specht will focus on co-leading outpatient groups and participating in Youth Anxiety Center research projects. Past externs have co-led inpatient and outpatient CBT groups and engaged in targeted inpatient CBT interventions. They have attended meetings and rounds on the child and adolescent inpatient units. Trainees have also been involved in ongoing outpatient research projects for anxious youth and received training on various semi-structured anxiety interviews.

All clinical and research activities are intensively supervised by a licensed psychologist (MHF or MS). Trainees will attend weekly clinical and research supervision meetings. Externs are also strongly encouraged to attend Psychology and Psychiatry Grand Rounds, and other training opportunities available during the year.

If you would like further information prior to submitting an application, please contact Dr. Megan Hughes-Feltenberger via email at or Dr. Matthew Specht via email at
