Description of Externship

Dr. Nira Nafisi, an affiliate of Cognitive Behavioral Associates (CBA) in Great Neck, New York, is currently seeking a psychology extern interested in training in CBT, PCIT and DBT approaches. Dr. Nira Nafisi is dedicated to mindfully cultivating a collaborative & supportive clinical team in order to provide excellent care in evidence-based treatments in an environment that fosters ongoing, engaging professional learning. A collaborative and supportive working environment with training in empirically validated treatment approaches is offered. Externs will be afforded the following opportunities and training experiences: • Primary therapist for adults, adolescents, families, and children in DBT, CBT, & PCIT approaches • Assistant group leader in multi-family DBT skills group (adolescent/young adult) in conjunction with the CBA team • Assistant group leader in adult DBT skills group • Weekly hour supervision, that includes review and feedback on videotaped sessions • Hour+ weekly team consultation meeting together with CBA team psychologists • Receive additional consultation regarding your clients • Collaborate with 8 psychologists in a supportive setting— learn from one another’s cases • Experience mindfulness practice in team weekly • Weekly didactic teachings • Learn about the business side of private practice • Flexible times for scheduling your individual clients • Possibilities of involvement with intakes, structured interviewing, or research • Work in beautifully furnished suite with wireless internet & kitchen as well as a one-way mirror and observation room designed to conduct PCIT sessions • Within short walking distance of the Port Washington branch LIRR (Great Neck Station) The externship runs from July thru June. Attending didactics and team meeting on Tuesdays are required. The externship will be limited to either two full days or 16 hours per week. Three weeks vacation/sick time is provided. While externs carry out some administrative tasks for the practice (e.g., preparing handouts for sessions and writing notes), it is the expectation that trainees will have an active hands-on role planning groups with co-leaders and leading portions of group as they are ready.
