Scheduling (e.g., required/optional days of week, # hrs per day, total hours per week, flexibility in scheduling):

2 days a week (16 hours). We are flexible with days but students must attend a mandatory DBT group consultation/supervision meetings on Fridays at 11:00.

Required level of readiness (any prior experiences or level of training required for applicants):

3rd or 4th year students with some previous clinical experience.

Preferred level of readiness(any prior experiences preferred for applicants):

Experience working with adults in indvidual and/or group therapy is preferred.

What materials need to be submitted?

  • Letter of interest
  • CV
  • Two letters of recommendation, one that specifically speaks to the student's clinical skills
  • A letter from your school stating that you are in good academic standing
  • An official transcript, and one clinical write-up (e.g., test report, case report) with all identifying information removed

How should it be submitted?

Submissions are accepted via mail or email.

Interviews will be scheduled as applications are received. Offers will be made on the "match day" that is set by NY externships. Students with offers will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. We will be accepting 3 externs into our program. **We stil have openings for the 2014-2015 year. Please feel free to apply!!**

Description of Externship

Populations commonly served:

 Adult psychiatric patients with serious and persistent mental illness residing in inpatient wards. Diagnoses include: schizophrenia; schizoaffective disorder; bipolar disorder; major depressive disorder; antisocial, narcissistic, borderline, and other personality disorders; polysubstance and/or alcohol abuse; mental retardation; and/or forensic involvement.

Individual Psychotherapy

Expected number of cases seen at any one time:

  • 2-4 individual treatment cases
  • 3 groups (lead or co-lead)
  • 1-3 MSTE cases
  • 2-4 psychological testing batteries per year

Assessment training experiences commonly offered:

Assessment supervision is provided for test administration, scoring, and report writing. Externs may have the opportunity to administer objective and projective personality tests as well as cognitive tests.
