General Information

Start Date: September 1, 2017

End Date: June 21, 2018 (Interested students may opt to extend their externship beyond June 21st; the maximum end date is August 31, 2018.)

Appropriate for:

Students enrolled in one of the following APA-accredited, doctoral-level programs:
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Counseling Psychology
  • School Psychology
  • Health Psychology

Scheduling:

Primary placements are at least 14 hours/week (excluding lunch). Depending on the placement, this time may be spread over 2 or 3 days, one of which must be Fridays at least from 11 AM to 1 PM. Please refer to the QHC externship brochure for additional scheduling requirements applicable to each primary placement.
  • For Child and Adolescent Outpatient -- 14 hours/week must include at least 5 consecutive school hours on one day (except Friday), and at least until 6 PM on that day or another.
  • For Adult Outpatient -- 14 hours/week may include one evening.
  • For Pediatrics -- 14 hours/week must include Thursday, as well as Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday.
  • For Cancer Center/Primary Care Clinic -- 14 hours/week must include Tuesday (cancer center) and Friday (primary care). The 14 hours must include the core period of 9AM to 4 PM.

Secondary Placements:

Additional experience may be available to an interested extern who wishes to work more than the 14 hours/week (s)he is assigned at the primary placement. Please see brochure for further information.

Required Level of Readiness:

Student must have already provided psychotherapy, under supervision, for at least one academic year at the time externship begins.
Students who are concurrently applying for internship will not be considered.

Preferred level of readiness: Third, fourth, and fifth year students are preferred.

Stipend: No

Application Process

Are applications permitted before January 15?

No. The earliest date students can submit applications is January 17, 2017.

What materials are required?

  • CV
  • Writing sample
  • Letter of readiness from DCT, including the maximum mumber of hours that the student may spend on externship
  • Two recommendation letters (At least one letter must be from a therapy supervisor.)
  • Cover letter, indicating which primary placement the student is seeking. (Students may apply to be considered for only one primary placement.)

Complete applications, with all component materials in electronic format and included in one submission, should be emailed to Leslie Bogen, J.D., Ph.D. at bogenl@nychhc.org. Piece-meal submissions will not be considered.
Letters of reference and eligibility should be in PDF format, signed, and on organization letterhead.
