SCPC follows the guidelines established by PSYDNYS. Extern candidates to be informed of interview status via e-mail. Interviews will begin following that date up until February 16th.

Description of Externship

Population Commonly Served

SCPC's inpatient program services Nassau and Suffolk County children and adolescents with a wide variety of psychological disorders requiring long term inpatient care. Our children and adolescents are referred from acute care hospitals in the community and their typical stay at SCPC is three to six months. Externs typically carry a caseload of two children/adolescents for the entire duration of the externship. Responsibilities include bi-weekly individual therapy and once weekly group therapy. Externs to complete a minimum of fifteen psychological evaluations which include the WISC-V, Rorschach and MMPI-A. If child/adolescent is returning home upon discharge, weekly family therapy to be offered as well. Externs to be responsible for all aspects of discharge planning including CSE meetings and educational reviews. The psychology externship at SCPC has a total of eight positions.


Sagamore Children's Psychiatric Center Units
E Unit

A child and adolescent inpatient unit comprised of mostly males ages 10-17 presenting with a wide variety of psychological disorders requiring inpatient care. Externs will carry a caseload of two children/adolescents, participate in team meetings, participate in diagnostics and complete psychological evaluations.

H Unit

An adolescent inpatient unit comprised of mostly females ages 13-17 that present with depression and suicidality. Externs will carry a caseload of two adolescents, participate in team meetings, participate in diagnostics and complete psychological evaluations.

F Unit

A child and adolescent inpatient unit comprised of mostly females ages 10-17 presenting with a wide variety of psychological disorders requiring inpatient care. Externs will carry a caseload of two children/adolescents, participate in team meetings, participate in diagnostics and complete psychological evaluations.

Court Remand

SCPC also services adolescents that are remanded by the courts for an evaluation period which could last up to two weeks. Externs to be part of team that assesses cognitive and emotional functioning.

Brennan Day Treatment Program

Day treatment is the most intensive, non-residential mental health/educational service for youngsters residing at home or in community-based residential alternatives. Brennan Day Treatment is a Sagamore outpatient program located in a BOCES middle and high school. Extern to carry a caseload of two children/adolescents and participate in team meetings. At least three days a month will be spent on psychological evaluations in the Inpatient facility. Fourth year students only.

Jerusalem Avenue Mental Health Clinic

Jerusalem Avenue Mental Health Clinic is a Sagamore clinic located in a BOCES elementary school. Extern to carry a caseload of two children (age 5-10) and participate in team meetings. This rotation is half year only; externs to begin on inpatient and transfer to Jerusalem Avenue in January 2019. At least three days a month will be spent on psychological evaluations in the Inpatient facility. Fourth year students only.
