Company Overview

The Center for Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapy is a group practice located in midtown Manhattan that serves a diverse array of patients on an outpatient basis. The majority of patients are adults with some sub-classification of anxiety disorders, but many clinical presentations are seen. The Staff at the Center (ranging between 18 to 21 therapists) are made up of Master level interns, 3 to 4 pre-doctoral externs, occasionally 1 clinical intern, 2 to 4 post-doctoral fellows, and 4 to 8 licensed psychologists. The majority of the senior staff are compremised from persons who started their training at the Center as pre-doctoral interns.

Dr. Steven Phillipson, the Center's Clinical ector, has a very specific clinical specialty working with obsessive-compulsive disorder; therefore many of the anxiety-disordered clientele will have this diagnosis. Dr. Phillipson also specializes in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions and depression. Dr. Marcus, the Center's Administrative ector, specializes in treating patients with relationship issues and medical issues including diabetes, chronic pain, and eating disorders. She maintains a certification in diabetes education (C.D.E.) and works extensively with the issues related to living with diabetes.

Description of Externship

Externs can anticipate carrying a caseload of between 8 to 12 individual patients in addition to co-leading weekly group therapy for individuals with OCD. The ages of patients typically range from early adolescence to the elderly and the socioeconomic status ranges from mid to upper income families. Most clients present with anxiety disorders (especially OCD), but depression and social skills deficits are also common areas of focus. Many individuals have Axis II diagnoses as well, including borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, dependent personality disorder and avoidant personality disorder.

Students can anticipate gaining proficiency providing individually-administered cognitive-behavioral interventions for the full spectrum of anxiety-related disorders, depressive disorders, health-related disorders, Axis II diagnoses, and a wide variety of DSM 5 diagnostic categories. A working knowledge in both group interventions and group dynamics will also be provided. Additional priorities and goals for externs are the development of sharp and accurate diagnostic skills, the application of ethical standards, and the maintenance of therapist-client boundaries. Students are continually guided with respect to the development of a strong sense of professionalism.

This is an advanced training site. Strong applicants will be capable of functioning with a good deal of autonomy while receiving excellent supervision to develop their growing skills. The Center is committed to fostering your professional growth in a legial atmosphere based on mutual respect.

You must be enrolled in an APA-approved clinical psychology doctoral program. Because this externship is an advanced training site, those applying should have at least one year of previous clinical experience working with an adult population. The externship is a 12 month commitment.
