Company Overview

The Child Mind Institute is an independent nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders. Our teams work every day to deliver the highest standards of care, advance the science of the developing brain and provide empowering resources for parents, professionals and policymakers. Together with our supporters, we help kids reach their full potential in school and in life.

The Child Mind Institute offers psychology graduate students a yearlong experience in one of our five externships:

  • ADHD and Behavior Disorders;
  • Anxiety Disorders;
  • Mood Disorders (including DBT);
  • Neuropsychology; and
  • Clinical Research.

The details and specific requirements for each of these externships are listed in the sections that following. Our clinical psychology externships are 12-month externships that will run from July 1, 2019 through June 26, 2020, and there is a mandatory Extern Orientation on July, 1, 2019.

Although each externship offers a unique training experience, there are several training and educational programs that are available to all of the Child Mind Institute clinical psychology externs. These programs are required on days the externs are present (e.g., if an extern does not train on Thursdays, Clinical Case Conference is not required):

  • Clinical Didactics: A twice-monthly series of didactics seminars that include a wide range of clinical, ethical, and professional topics. Each didactic is led by a Child Mind Institute faculty member that provides a talk in their area of expertise. These didactics take place on Friday mornings.
  • Clinical Case Conference: A once- or twice-monthly clinical meeting where faculty and trainees discuss testing and treatment cases and related issues. These conferences take place on Thursday mornings.
  • Visiting Professor Lecture Series: A monthly continuing education “grand rounds” lecture series that invites leaders in the field of child and adolescent mental health to talk about the latest research and treatment protocols. These experts have all conducted important research and have extensive clinical experience. They share their findings and expertise on a broad range of topics from anxiety and depression to temper outbursts and the effectiveness of parent-based treatment. These lectures take place on Friday mornings.
  • Clinical Extern Group Meeting: A weekly meeting with the Director of Clinical Training. The purpose of this meeting is to provide an open forum discuss externship program-related and professional topics.
