Provide description of Externship:

The psychology externship program at the Addiction Institute at Mt Sinai (AIMS) provides a specialized training experience in the treatment of substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. It is designed to provide exposure to commonly used treatment modalities used with this population such as motivational interviewing, harm reduction psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy and mindfulness based relapse prevention

As an extern in the AIMS outpatient department, you will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team composed of clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, licensed mental health counselors, and addiction medicine  specialists.  While at AIMS, you will be working with a varied population including, but not limited to, high functioning working professionals, lege students, gay men using crystal meth and patients with co-occurring disorders.  In addition to group work, you will have the opportunity to carry a caseload of approximately 3-5 individual therapy cases and will be asked to conduct intakes for patients seeking admittance to various programs in our outpatient department.  Didactic seminars are held approximately every 2 weeks

As an extern, you will be expected to work 16 hours per week and will receive one hour of individual and/or group supervision each week. The externship is a year-long commitment beginning in July.We DO NOT have a Summer externship program.
