Provide description of Externship:
The Audrey Hepburn Children’s House at Hackensack University Medical Center is the Northern Regional Diagnostic Center (RDTC) for Child Abuse and Neglect in New Jersey. We conduct psychological evaluations and provide psychotherapy to children and families who are involved with The Department of Child Protection and permanency (DCP&P) due to concerns for child maltreatment. Extern duties include Psychosocial or Psychological Evaluations; psychological testing; and Individual, Family and Group Therapy. Candidates must have experience providing psychotherapy and counseling to children, as well as be familiar with issues related to physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and emotional abuse. Many opportunities for further learning are available via supervision, diagnostic team discussion, in-services, and pediatric rounds. Externs participate in training and educational seminars, as well as supervision with experienced psychologists, to enhance their skills related to the evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents and adults. Various treatment modalities are utilized, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), EMDR, and Attachment Theory.
The staff at the Audrey Hepburn Children’s House is comprised of psychologists, social workers, child life specialists, pediatricians and nurses. The program utilizes a team approach, which includes multidisciplinary case conferences and collaboration with child protection agencies and law enforcement. The population served includes clients form a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Current supervisors are culturally diverse, as well as diverse in their theoretical orientations.

Preferences: Students should be entering their 3rd year of doctoral training, and have previous experience working with children.

Interview process: The candidate will meet with two of the staff psychologists who will be supervising externs during the training year. Students should come prepared to speak about a treatment or evaluation case that involved child(ren) or parenting issues. The entire Interview process will take less than one hour. Decisions will be made based upon compatibility between the student's interest and training and the training site.

Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered: 4-5 weekly individual therapy clients and 1-2 psychosocial evaluations per month.
