Provide description of Externship:
The Barnard College, Furman Counseling Center provides counseling services to a population of 2600 undergraduate students attending a women's residential, liberal arts college in New York City. The Center provides individual and group counseling, psychiatric evaluation for medication, referrals for long term therapy, biofeedback training and community outreach. The Center supports the commitment of the College to diversity, raising awareness of systems of oppression, unequal access to resources and works to support social justice.
The Center offers training within an integrative / psychodynamic/social justice framework that includes use of evidence based interventions (CBT, DBT , Mindfullness).
Externs conduct intakes/assessment, provide short term psychotherapy (up tp 8 sessions) and referrals if indicated. They are trained in the use of biofeedback and will be involved in community outreach activities. Externs work with students who present with a range of issues including adjustment, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, loss, relationship conflicts, family issues etc. Externs may have opportunity to co-lead a group.
Required hours are 10-2 on Wednesdays, and one evening per week until 7PM.

3 externs to be accepted for 2019-20:
Minimum level of readiness required for applicants: at least one year of clinical experience
Preferences: externs who do not have clinical experience will not be considered

Interview process: Candidates meet for an individual interview with Training Director and a staff psychologist

Intervention training experiences offered:
8-9 individual cases each week, occasional biofeedback training, possible group but not typical, outreach 1-2 x per month (not every month)
Assessment testing is not a service that we offer.
