Bellevue - NYC Health + Hospitals: Adult Track, Adult Inpatient Psychology Specialty

ATTENTION: EXTERNSHIP APPLICANTS MAY ONLY APPLY TO ONE SPECIALTY AREA AT BELLEVUE - NEW YORK CITY HEALTH + HOSPITALS. If you apply to more than one specialty area, then you will not be considered for any.

The Externship in Adult Inpatient Psychology aims to provide a unique opportunity to refine the extern’s understanding of psychopathology in its most acute through exposure to psychiatrically-hospitalized patients within two of Bellevue’s inpatient units. Externs will gain experience and increased understanding of the role of psychological assessment and intervention in the treatment of severely and persistently mentally ill individuals. Externs will also have the opportunity to function as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team and gain a comprehension of the role of an inpatient psychologist in relation to psychiatry, social work, activity therapy and nursing.

Externs are expected to participate in community meeting and team rounds, lead or co-lead groups focusing on awareness of illness, symptom management and relapse prevention, provide individual psychotherapy as well as family therapy, conduct psychological assessments and participate in the therapeutic milieu.

This placement is designed to give students the broadest possible exposure to patients who present with a variety of presenting problems and diagnoses. A number of inpatient psychiatric units are available for assignment, including the Asian unit and the Latino unit. The wide range of socioeconomic, language and cultural factors that characterize the inpatient population of Bellevue provides a unique opportunity to work within a specialized milieu where externs will be exposed to individuals whose mental illnesses are further complicated by social inequities, acculturation problems and a lack of access to adequate health care. Through participation in the activities of multiple units, students will learn about the unique impact of the multitude of social and cultural factors on diagnosis, symptom presentation, and treatment. They will become more comfortable with working with individuals evincing severe psychiatric problems not usually evident in community settings.

Sixteen hours per week are required with mandatory Friday attendance.

Intervention and Assessment:

Intervention training experiences offered: See description above.

Estimate average number of individual patients that students will carry; estimate number of groups and other types of interventions. Offer description: Each extern can expect to carry between 2-4 patients while running at least one group. Since the presenting psychopathology differs widely in a Bellevue inpatient psychiatric unit, the interventions are varied as well and are tailored to suit not just the symptoms of presenting psychopathology but the wide-ranging demographics and cultural considerations of the patient population. Students will be embedded within a multi-disciplinary treatment team and will have the benefit of exposure to opinions and knowledge of practitioners in medicine, social work, nursing and activity therapy; they will have opportunities to be part of the team that conducts the initial interview, as well as influence the aftercare of these patients.

Assessment training experiences commonly offered. Describe: See description above.

Expected number of full assessment batteries completed during externship (defined as administration of a battery of standardized tests): Externs should NOT expect to have opportunities for full assessments since batteries are administered by the Neuro-psychological Testing Service. However, common instruments will be discussed in context of an inpatient milieu.

Supervisory styles are dependent on individual assigned supervisors but the externship is dedicated to the professional and personal growth of students while exposing them to the roles and responsibilities of psychology in an inpatient milieu. Supervisors range widely in treatment orientations including cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic modalities. Students, however, should expect to be challenged beyond their usual comfort zones but at the same time, demonstrate some reasonable measure of independence.

Specify if observation occurs during intervention, assessment, consultation [audio, video, live in person (in treatment room, one-way mirror, live video stream)]: Observation occurs live in person, with the supervisor joining the extern in the treatment room.
