Provide description of Externship:

A varied group of individuals age 4 to adult currently seek treatment at the center. Diagnoses include: ADHD, LD (reading, writing, math, nonverbal), OCD, Mood Disorders, ASD, Neurological Disorders, etc. Treatment is provided in a private office for 50 minute sessions. Individuals come once, twice and sometimes three times per week providing intensive learning experiences.

Within the lexicon of play therapy, family therapy, behavior therapy, etc., "homework therapy" describes the mix of interventions , and the framework used to understand case dynamics. Using homework as a starting point for treatment provides a non-threatening and extremely relevant activity through which to develop a therapeutic alliance. Many clients currently in treatment utilize sessions for "talk" therapy, although it is unlikely that they, and their parents, would ever have initiated treatment with a psychotherapist. Given that school is a primary responsibility for our clients (both children and adults), beginning treatment by focusing on homework provides a modality through which a client's internal conflicts and methods for coping can be examined. Often these conflicts and coping deficits are played out at home causing distress in the family. Sometimes the family dynamic needs to be assessed to understand a child's unwillingness to complete homework assignments e.g., a wish to have mother or father spend more time with them.  Once understood, these conflicts and coping deficits can be treated through more traditional therapeutic techniques such as interpretations, reflections, self-talk strategies, etc...

In addition, externs complete full evaluations.  Assessments include neuropsychological, cognitive, achievement, and social-emotional evaluation.  Individuals age 4 to adult are seen. 

Trainees receive supervision with a licensed Psychologist.

  1. One hour individual supervision
  2. One hour group supervision - with other trainees
  3. 90 minute group testing supervision
