Description of the Externship:
The Lieber Recovery Clinic externship provides students with training in CBT oriented treatments to help people with serious mental illnesses lead productive lives. The extern's clinical work will involve providing skills and psychotherapy groups, individual therapy, and assessment to patients enrolled at the Lieber Recovery Clinic. General information about the externship site:
The Lieber Recovery Clinic provides treatment for people with severe psychiatric illnesses who are seeking state of the art, community based private care. As part of the Columbia Psychiatry network of services, our clients have access to a full spectrum of psychiatric and psychological care. In an atmosphere of caring support, clients receive individualized outpatient treatment, life skills training, and psychiatric rehabilitation services, with an emphasis on getting back to work and school. We are committed to helping adults with schizophrenia, or other serious mental illness, to improve their quality of life, and achieve their goals to broaden their social network, work, finish school, and move into independent living in the community.

Minimum level of readiness: Applicants should have completed a prior externship, have worked with people who have psychotic disorders, and completed coursework in CBT and assessment.
Preferences: Students interested in CBT for psychosis, learning to provide cognitive remediation and social cognition training.
Interested applicants should follow a two step procedure.

There will be three interview days scheduled on a Wednesday starting January 30. On the interview day you will attend a group orientation and two individual interviews.
Intervention and Assessment:
The typical 16 hour externship includes 8 hours direct care, 2 hours supervision, 1 hour clinic meetings, 5 hours relevant didactics and time to complete paperwork. Most externs run 3 therapy groups and see 2 individual cases during a week. On average one brief cognitive assessment using instruments like the MCCB are done a month. One to two full assessments are usually completed during the year.

Our externs are able to participate in a peer support consortium with other Columbia externship sites. This can be both live or using internet.
The Lieber Recovery Clinic is readily accessible through public transportation, and is wheelchair accessible.
Home visits are not required as part of the trainee's duties. A transportation stipend is not provided.
