Provide description of Externship:

The Center for OCD and Related Disorders, ected by Dr. Blair Simpson, is seeking a graduate student extern for the 2019-2020 academic year. The mission of our center is to improve the lives of individuals with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related problems, by advancing our understanding of and the treatment for these disorders. We are a research clinic, meaning that our patients receive treatment as part of our research studies, or following their participation in one of our research studies. The externship will provide extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of OCD and related disorders.


General information about externship site:

The extern will be thoroughly trained in Exposure and Response Prevention (EX/RP) and will deliver exposure-based CBT treatments to individuals with OCD or anxiety, either following their participation in one of our studies, or as a study therapist. The extern will carry a caseload of 2-3 outpatients with anxiety or OCD. Our extern will also be trained in the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM, and have the opportunity to be trained in other assessment measures (e.g., the Y-BOCS for OCD, the HAM-D for depression). The externship offers 1 hour individual and 1 hour of group supervision, and 3 hours of didactics.

Minimum level of readiness (any prior experiences or level of training required for applicants: Must be in at least 3rd year of graduate training. Master's Degree and experience with CBT required.

Preferences: Experience in administration of the SCID and experience treating OCD are preferred (but not required).

Interviews:
When do you expect to begin interviews? (Applications can be submitted no earlier than Jan 22): January 23.

Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered: Estimate average number of individual patients that students will carry; estimate number of groups and other types of interventions. Offer description:

Individual psychotherapy; Externs will carry a caseload of 2-3 outpatients with anxiety or OCD. 

Assessment training experiences commonly offered. Describe: SCID, Mental Status Exam, YBOCS
Expected number of full assessment batteries completed during externship (defined as administration of a battery of standardized tests): 1-4 SCIDs per week.

Supervision:
Estimate hours/week of individual supervision: 1 hour
Estimated hours/week of group supervision: 1 hour
Estimated hour/week of didactics: 3 hours

Depending on days that you are on site, additional opportunities include: (1) participation in the Anxiety Disorders Clinic scientific research meeting (Mondays at 12pm), where we discuss papers, presentations, and grants; (2) participation in OCD team meeting (Tuesdays at 2pm), where details of our clinical research studies are discussed, and (3) attendance at the Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds (Wednesdays at 11:00am), where national and internationally famous researchers present their data on a wide range of topics in psychiatry and psychology.
