CONEY ISLAND HOSPITAL

Provide description of Externship:

Coney Island Hospital is a public hospital located in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.  It is part of the New York City Health + Hospitals network.  Our patient population is multicultural, consisting chiefly of immigrants from Russia, Latin America, and the Middle East.  We serve patients with a wide variety of psychiatric diagnoses, ranging from severe psychotic conditions to high functioning anxiety or depressive disorders.   In most cases, externs provide treatment collaboratively with other disciplines, such as a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner who provides medication management.  Externs have the option of participating in two distinct tracks.  In the first track, externs spend time providing psychotherapy and testing in the outpatient mental health clinic and the acute psychiatric inpatient unit of the hospital, as well as our highly-regarded chemical dependency outpatient program.  There are opportunities for individual, family, and group psychotherapy, as well as completing psychiatric screening interviews.   In the second track, externs work exclusively in our Assisted Community Treatment program, which is a mobile treatment program that focuses on providing care though home visits to patients in the community whose needs have not been sufficiently met by more traditional forms of treatment.    Because Coney Island Hospital has an extern program only, without an internship program, externs receive the full attention of senior clinical staff.  All of our clinical supervisors are seasoned licensed clinicians, and several have advanced postdoctoral training.  Our clinical approach is flexible and practical, drawing from our background in psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, experiential, family systems, and solution-focused orientations.
