New Jersey - Special Combined Externship
The Selective Mutism Program of the Child Study Center and The Institute for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders seek graduate students to complete a year-long Special Combined Externship in delivering treatments for children with ADHD who have Organizational Skills Deficits, for children with Selective Mutism, and for children with varied disorders. There are two externship positions available at our New Jersey Office located in Hackensack, New Jersey. Justin Misurell, Ph.D., the Clinical Director of the New Jersey Office and Richard Gallagher, Ph.D. - the Director of Special Projects within the Institute for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders and Co-Director of the Selective Mutism Program serve as externship supervisors.
All externs will be
involved in providing clinical interventions created and advanced at the NYU
Child Study Center. Externs will learn and deliver Organizational Skills
Treatment for children with ADHD. Work
with elementary school students and extensions of this intervention for older
students are also provided. Externs will also learn to deliver treatment for
selective mutism. Furthermore, training
opportunities for delivering Game-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for
childhood anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders will be provided. All interventions involve extensive
opportunities to work with individuals, their families, and professionals in
The extern will receive training in cognitive-behavioral case conceptualization. With the guidance and support of a staff psychologist, the extern will prepare a case presentation to present at a team meeting. Case presentations usually consist of a conceptualization, brief literature review, and overview of the treatment approach. This practice exercise aims to help prepare students for advanced training requirements of internship. Externs can also assist in presentations given to the NYU academic community, as well as to local community organizations and professional groups. Opportunities for classroom observations to supplement the clinical treatments and evaluation may also be available. Opportunities may arise for externs to participate in clinical research projects that are being conducted by staff psychologists.

Externs are expected to carry a weekly caseload of 6-8 individual therapy patients. Additionally, externs will have the opportunity to conduct one group per week. Furthermore, opportunities for classroom observations to supplement the clinical evaluation may also be available.

Assessment training experiences commonly offered. Describe:This externship incorporates psycho-diagnostic and neuropsychological evaluations. Patient populations include persons with anxiety disorders, with ADHD with comorbid learning problems and with learning disorders. Externs will participate in intakes and feedback relevant to these testing cases.

Context of didactics (seminars, Grand Rounds): The NYU Child Study Center, located at One Park Avenue in New York City offers an intensive weekly training program on Friday's throughout the summer. Externs are expected to attend these training sessions, which include workshops on delivering are variety of evidence-based interventions including CBT, PCIT, OST, DBT, exposure therapy for anxiety, treatments for ASD, and treatments for selective mutism as well neuropsychological assessments, among others. These didactic sessions are given by members of the faculty at the NYU Child Study Center and NYU School of Medicine and are considered critical to the effective delivery of interventions and assessments throughout the externship year.
Estimated informal open door "curbside" supervision: supervisors welcome extern questions at any time and prioritize the need for ongoing supervision by making themselves available by phone, email and in person if needed. Additionally, staff psychologists in our office are available and interested in supporting and assisting externs when they have clinical questions relevant to their area of expertise.
Describe direct supervision: Externs will meet weekly with Dr. Misurell (i.e., GB-CBT for anxiety and disruptive behaviors and general CBT cases) and Dr. Gallagher (i.e., Selective Mutism and OST cases) separately. They will be presented with background information regarding particular case assignments, provided with education and training on relevant intervention models, and are expected to come to supervision prepared with questions about their cases. Additional attention is paid to case formulation and treatment planning from a CBT perspective.

Observation will take place by incorporating externs into therapy sessions and evaluations conducted by staff psychologists and supervisors.
