JCCA Brooklyn’s Psychology Externship Program trains psychology externs to work with children and families involved in the foster care and child welfare systems. The program is founded on a model of training that emphasizes broad exposure to cases and in-depth clinical experience. Externs are trained through close clinical supervision, seminars and collaborative work with multi-disciplinary treatment teams. Externs work closely with staff psychologists who function as their clinical supervisors. The opportunity to work with supervisors who have different areas of expertise and theoretical orientations enables externs to develop their own professional approach to clinical work. Externs are trained to provide theoretically sound clinical services, which are grounded in the latest research and literature in the field of psychology. They are continually evaluating the effectiveness of their clinical intervention and strengthening their skills by utilizing feedback from clients, supervisors and peers.
Externs carry a caseload of 3-5 individual therapy cases, conduct initial psychological evaluations as well as more extensive diagnostic testing, and provide yearly behavioral assessments of children in JCCA’s care. Furthermore, there are opportunities for group work, family interventions, and foster parent trainings.
Prior to starting externship, externs must receive clearance from HR, which entails a background check and drug screening. This process is typically initiated in mid – late June.

How many hours a week are expected of extern?:
The externship is 16 to 20 hours per week, distributed over two or three days. Evening hours (until 7pm) are expected so as to see clients after school.

Applicants should be at least entering their third year of a doctoral program in clinical, counseling, or school psychology.
Applicants with at least one year of previous clinical experience, as well as experience administering, scoring, and writing psychological assessments, are preferred. In addition, coursework in child/adolescent and family therapy and developmental psychology is preferred.
Applicants who are concurrently applying to internship sites will be considered. Note: Current and former JCCA externs are encouraged to apply to JCCA’s Pre-doctoral Psychology Internship Program.

Applications will be accepted beginning January 22, 2019. Interviews will be scheduled by site supervisors after all of an applicant’s materials have been received and reviewed.

Applicants who are selected to interview will be contacted by a staff psychologist via email. Interviews generally take place from late January to late February, and are conducted individually. Applicants who apply to more than one JCCA site (e.g. Brooklyn and Bronx) might be interviewed once, and will have the opportunity to indicate their order of preference, if any, during the interview. Current and former externs are encouraged to apply to our pre-doctoral psychology internship program.
