Provide description of Externship:
The Child Track externship at Kings County Hospital Center is primarily an inpatient child and adolescent psychiatry training experience. Clinical training is centered on the inpatient child, adolescent, and young adult first break psychosis units in short-term individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, milieu treatment, and psychodiagnostic assessment. There are three co-ed units: one for adolescents 14 - 17 years old, one for 16 - 23 year old patients with first break psychosis, and a unit for children under age 13 and under. There are two rotations: Externs move from one inpatient unit to another mid-year. Externs are responsible for individual psychotherapy of one inpatient child or adolescent at a time. This includes participation on a multidisciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, therapeutic rehabilitation therapists, dieticians, pediatricians. Externs conduct individual and family therapy for their assigned case, and contact agencies and schools related to patient care. Externs also participate in community meetings and behavioral level meetings with patients on each unit, and co-lead a once weekly therapeutic group. Externs are responsible for conducting full psychodiagnostic evaluations as well as brief screening assessments. Depending on interest and scheduling, the extern may request one to two outpatient psychotherapy cases in the Child & Adolescent Outpatient Department.
