Provide description of Externship:
Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center (KFPC) is offering a part-time (16-20 hour per week) externship in forensic psychology for for the 2019-2020 academic year. KFPC provides secure treatment and evaluation for the forensic patients (often with severe mental illness) and courts of New York City and Long Island. Most patients are received through the courts under Criminal Procedure Law (CPL) or through the OMH Commissioner's office via the New York State Code of Rules and Regulations (NYSCRR) regarding hospitalization of the mentally ill. Patients are admitted to Kirby primarily for fitness restoration in order to stand trial for a crime they are accused of or are admitted following charges that are adjudicated not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Treatment at Kirby is provided in accordance with the current standards of professional care outlined by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO) and is carried out with respect for each patient's privacy and rights, in agreement with his/her level of functioning and need for security. KFPC has an active staff education program as well as academic affiliations with several metropolitan area universities, to help assure quality treatment and state of the art care.

Preferences: This externship is appropriate for candidates with at least one prior year of externship training. Candidates with interest in forensic psychology are strongly encouraged to apply.

Interview process: Applicants will be interviewed individually by the co-directors of the externship program.

Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered: Externs will be assigned to an inpatient unit and will participate on their unit's interdisciplinary treatment team. They will gain experience in providing evidence based individual and group psychotherapy on an inpatient basis. Externs will be expected to carry 2 individual psychotherapy patients. Externs will provide psychological consultation to their unit's treatment team regarding their patient's progress.
Assessment training experiences commonly offered. Describe: Externs will conduct psychological assessments pursuant to NYS criminal procedure law 730 to determine patient's fitness to stand trial . They will also gain experience conducting evaluations to determine dangerousness as a result of mental illness. Externs will conduct diagnostic interviews, conduct mental status examination and administer of full psychological/neuropsychological batteries.

Context of didactics (seminars, Grand Rounds): Externs will be required to participate in the hosptial's weekly didactic forensic seminar. Externs will also have the opportunity to attend NYU Langone psychiatry grand rounds. Externs will also attend court at the hospital on a biweekly basis.

Is the agency readily accessible through public transportation?: Yes. Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center is located on Wards Island. The hospital provides free transportation to the hospital from the 4,5,6 subway station at 125th street in Manhattan.
