Long Island Jewish Medical Center Geropsychology Externship Track, Northwell Health

Provide description of Externship:

The Clinical Geropsychology externship is based in the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry, the bulk of which is within the Geriatric Outpatient Service with an alternate concentration in the Geropsychiatry Inpatient Service. The extern is part of a multidisciplinary team and gains experience with older adults (62 years of age and older) who have a variety of psychosocial problems and psychiatric disorders. It now includes a High Risk placement (formerly Gero Partial Hospital) with periodic exposure  to inpatient units for consultation-liaison purposes. We also offer an Inpatient Concentration (see below) for those who wish to gain experience in that milieu.

In addition to being trained in intervention approaches that are applicable throughout the life span, virtually anyone in practice will treat a growing percentage of older adults and this placement equips the clinician with the necessary tools for this population. Patients seen at the outpatient clinic predominantly have psychiatric disorders characterized by depression, anxiety and adjustment reactions to life stressors. Patients seen in the Inpatient Service have acute episodes of a range of severe psychiatric conditions. Patients selected for trainee assignment are those assessed to be appropriate therapy candidates. A typical patient might be a community dwelling retired widower dealing with anxiety as well as unresolved grief for the loss of a spouse or an adult child.
