Long Island Jewish Medical Center, The Zucker Hillside Hospital: Specialized Ambulatory Centers, OCD Externship Track

Provide description of Externship:

The OCD Externship Track at Long Island Jewish Medical Center offers the opportunity to work in Zucker Hillside Hospital's outpatient Center of Specialization in OCD. Externs work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Requirements: A minimum of two days per week time commitment is required, for a total of 16 hours per week. Evening hours on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Team meetings are on Tuesdays; attendance on Tuesdays is preferred but not required.

The OCD Center offers specialized, evidence-based treatment for patients impacted by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related conditions, including self-limiting perfectionism, obsessive compulsive personality disorder, and body dysmorphic disorder. OCD is characterized by (1) recurrent, intrusive, and distressing thoughts, urges, or images (obsessions) and (2) repetitive mental or behavioral acts that the individual feels driven to perform (compulsions) to prevent or reduce distress, or to prevent some dreaded event or situation. The treatment modality is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), specifically Exposure and Response Prevention, the gold standard psychotherapy for OCD. Externs will also apply other forms of cognitive behavioral therapy, including cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and motivational interviewing, as well as mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches. Individual and group supervision are provided by experts in OCD and related disorders. Externs participate in weekly didactics covering topics related to treatment and professional development.
