Maimonides Medical Center Child and Adolescent Outpatient Service

Provide description of Externship:

Maimonides Child and Adolescent Outpatient Service (CAOS) is a hospital based, child and family centered mental health service specializing in the multidisciplinary treatment of complex psychiatric, psychological and psychosocial problems with a community based setting. Our mission is to provide accessible, coordinated, and high quality mental health care to our patients in a culturally informed, academically grounded environment.  Our psychology externs are an integral part of this service, carrying a varied caseload, coleading groups, conducting psychological testing and intakes and joining in multidisciplinary meetings.  Maimonides offers a rich and varied clinical experience in terms of age, diagnosis, level of risk, cultural diversity and treatment modalities.

How many hours a week are expected of extern?:  16.  Must be onsite Fridays til 1PM and two afternoons.

Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered: Estimate average number of individual patients that students will carry; estimate number of groups and other types of interventions. Offer description:  5-6 individual patients, group opportunity, biweekly intakes
Assessment training experiences commonly offered. Describe:  cognitive and projective measures including Rorschach
Expected number of full assessment batteries completed during externship (defined as administration of a battery of standardized tests):  2 with an option of 3
Estimate # of integrated assessment reports per year:  2 with an option of 3

Supervision:
Estimate hours/week of individual supervision:  1 hr plus 1 hr peer supervision
Estimated hours/week of group supervision: 1 hr

Estimated co-therapy hours with supervisors:  externs may  co-lead groups with supervisors
Context of didactics (seminars, Grand Rounds): weekly extern didactic where staff present areas of expertise.
Estimated informal open door "curbside" supervision: as needed;  supervisors are readily available
Describe direct supervision: weekly supervision for individual cases and any other relevant issues, concerns
Specify if observation occurs during intervention, assessment, consultation (audio, video, live in person (in treatment room, one-way mirror, live video stream): observation occurs during intakes with supervisors in the room. Also may occur when co-leading group
