The externship in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences has an emphasis on the neuropsychological assessment of adults with non-central nervous system cancers as well as geriatric patients. Patients with brain tumors who have a neuropsychiatric presentation as well as adolescents 16 years+ are also seen.

Preferences: We prefer 1) 3rd year or more advanced graduate student and 2) experience with assessment. However, we accept all levels of graduate students currently enrolled in a doctoral program in psychology.

When do you expect to begin interviews? (Applications can be submitted no earlier than Jan 22): We conduct interviews as scheduling allows between 02/04/2019-03/01/2019.
Interview process: We conduct individual in-person interviews where the applicant can see our site and meet the supervisors. Based on personal maturity, clinical ability, and interpersonal skill, we decide to offer an applicant an externship position.

One de-identified test neuropsychological report (preferably of a patient but will accept a pseudo-patient); if do not have a neuropsychological report we will accept a psychodiagnostic report.

Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered: Externs assess 1-2 patients a week. Additionally, they score, interpret, and write the neuropsychological report. Externs gain experience in intervention by participating in feedback sessions to patients about their neuropsychological functioning and can learn about cognitive rehabilitation.
Assessment training experiences commonly offered: Externs assess cognitive side-effects of cancer treatment, evaluate baseline ability pre-treatment, evaluate for dementia, ADHD, TBI, schizophrenia, etc.

Didactics (seminars, Grand Rounds): Grand Rounds in Psychiatry, Grand Rounds in Neurology, Neurocognitive Research Lab, neuropsychology didactics, journal club, professional issues. Externs can participate in departmental didactic program for psychiatry fellows, psychology pre-docs, and psychology post-docs.
