Metropolitan Center for Mental Health (MCMH) Psychology Externship

Provide description of Externship:

Metropolitan Center for Mental Health (MCMH) offers an externship opportunity for psychology doctoral students interested in providing therapeutic services to a diverse patient population in an outpatient setting. Externs will work with child/adolescent and adult patients with complex psychopathologies. Externs will provide individual therapy, complete intake assessments,  conduct full-battery psychological evaluations, and have the option to co-lead a group. In addition, externs will attend weekly didactics, process group, group supervision, and individual supervision meetings. All clinical activities will be supervised by a licensed psychologist. Additional supervision with administrative team is provided as needed.  Externs will be provided with opportunities to develop clinical skills tailored to their specific learning goals.

Metropolitan Center for Mental Health (MCMH) is a private, non-profit, community-based, outpatient mental health clinic that offers mental health services to the New York City population. Since its founding in 1962, MCMH has offered a range of affordable mental health services including individual psychotherapy, group therapy, psychiatric consultation, and medication management to children, adolescents, and adults from vulnerable populations. MCMH is committed to facilitating rapid access to mental health care for children, adolescents, and adults of diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Interviews:

Interview process (provide information about interview process- time frame, how decisions are made) Also, do you conduct individual and/or group interviews; case presentation, other information?: Application materials are reviewed and applicants are scheduled for 45-minute individual interviews (including case presentation) held on-site over the course of a three-week period.

Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered: Estimate average number of individual patients that students will carry; estimate number of groups and other types of interventions.   Externs will carry caseload of approximately 10 patients including 1 intake. Depending on the extern's availability and schedule, he/she may have the opportunity to co-lead a group.

Supervision:
Estimate hours/week of individual supervision: 1 hr and 30 min of individual supervision per week
Estimated hours/week of group supervision: 1 hr of group supervision per week

Context of didactics (seminars, Grand Rounds): Rotation includes an intake seminar, child therapy, adolescent therapy, working with families/collaterals, psychopharmacology, co-occurring disorders, and integrated care
Estimated informal open door "curbside" supervision: Ad-hoc availability on-site with clinic administrative staff during all clinic hours
Describe direct supervision: Weekly supervision meetings scheduled for case consultation, assessment case support, etc. Additional supervision by supervisor or administrative team may be requested as needed.
Specify if observation occurs during intervention, assessment, consultation (audio, video, live in person (in treatment room, one-way mirror, live video stream): Face-to-face supervision is provided for interventions, assessment cases, and consultation. Audio supervision may be provided for specific cases.
