Montefiore Medical Center - Neuropsychology Assessment Service

Provide description of Externship:

The Neuropsychology Assessment Service (NAS) at Montefiore Medical Center (MMC) has openings for three clinical neuropsychology externs for 2019-2020. The NAS is an outpatient program in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at MMC. The director of the NAS is Dr. Bryan Freilich, a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist, and the assistant director of the NAS is Dr. Nicole Feirsen. Externs at the NAS will learn to administer, score, and interpret neuropsychological test batteries in a wide range of patient populations across the lifespan (ages 6+), including those with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, mild cognitive impairment, stroke, traumatic brain injury/concussion, Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, anoxic brain injury, HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder, systemic lupus erythematosus, sickle cell disease, brain tumors and cognitive changes associated with other types of cancers (e.g., leukemia and breast cancer treatments), ruptured aneurysms/arteriovenous malformations, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and specific learning disorders. In addition, externs will engage in report writing and learn to interview and provide feedback to patients. There is also an opportunity to gain research experience in ongoing investigations and develop individual projects to meet requirements for master’s degree or doctoral dissertation research.

Current enrollment as a doctoral student in Psychology is required. Graduate coursework in neuropsychology and prior testing experience is preferred. The extern is expected to work a minimum of two days per week.

Specify if observation occurs during intervention, assessment, consultation (audio, video, live in person (in treatment room, one-way mirror, live video stream): Direct observation mostly occurs in the beginning of practicum when first learning new testing measures and is done on an as needed basis throughout.
