Montefiore Medical Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine - Child Outpatient Psychiatry Department (COPD) Externship Program; Child & Adolescent Track & Eating Disorders Track

Overview of the Program:
The goal of the Child and Adolescent Externship Track is to prepare externs to work primarily with children and adolescents (ages 5-18) and their families in an outpatient setting, including being competent to use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with depressed and/or suicidal adolescents (and their families) and Cognitive behavioral Therapy (CBT) for youth with depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD and related disorders, and disruptive behavioral disorders. We view this externship as a “mini-internship” and our externs will be training alongside our psychology interns. We serve families within the Bronx who are from predominantly ethnic minority groups, economically disadvantaged, and are often experiencing significant psychosocial stressors. As part of this externship, students will increase their competency in assessing, diagnosing, formulating, and treating children and adolescents and their families, individually and in groups, using a variety of evidence-based short- and long-term psychotherapies, while also learning how to liaison with schools, foster care agencies, the Committee on Special Education, and other relevant organizations in the area. We house a number of specialty programs within our Child Outpatient Psychiatry Department including: the Anxiety and Mood Program (AMP), serving children and adolescents with depression, anxiety, trauma, disruptive behavioral disorders, and OCD and related disorders; the Adolescent Depression and Suicide Program (ADSP), serving adolescents with chronic suicidality, depression, non-suicidal self-injury, and/or borderline personality disorder; and the Eating Disorder Program at Montefiore (EDPM), serving youth with eating disorders. We view this externship as a “mini-internship”, as our externs train alongside our psychology interns and work as part of a multidisciplinary team while also being able to liaison with schools, foster care and preventive agencies.

Applicants can apply to our general child/adolescent track and/or our eating disorder track (see descriptions below). For those who are interested in BOTH tracks, you only need to submit one application. Please indicate your preference for tracks in your cover letter.
