Montefiore Medical Center Rose F Kennedy Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center - Adult Literacy Program

Provide description of Externship:

The Adult Literacy Program (ALP) at the Fisher Landau Center for the Treatment of Learning Disabilities of Montefiore/RFK provides evaluation and treatment services for individuals age 18 and over who are concerned about their learning and academic skills. 

  • Psychoeducational evaluation assesses a person's individual strengths and weaknesses to determine level of skills and areas of need. Results are used to guide treatment and educational planning. If indicated, results will guide recommendations for accommodations and modifications within the academic and/or vocational setting. 
  • Intervention to address reading and writing difficulties and associated social-emotional issues is designed around an individual's needs and is provided in a 1:1 setting using multi-sensory, evidence-based methods. Technology is also utilized to promote functional literacy skills and compensatory strategies. Intervention also includes supportive counseling and behavior modification techniques to address issues related to self-esteem/self-confidence and understanding of disability, as well as symptoms of anxiety and depression that often stem from long-term struggle and shame.

 Currently, the ALP serves a majority of low literacy adults from low income, urban areas who seek out evaluation and treatment for a variety of reasons. Some hope to improve their skills so they can earn their high school equivalency or be successful in college or another academic setting, some hope to improve their vocational options, some want to be able to help their children with their homework, or read a book to their grandchildren. Some simply want to be more independent in their daily activities, such as reading a menu, street signs, or the newspaper. All want to feel more successful and secure in their daily lives.

Minimum level of readiness (any prior experiences or level of training required for applicants: This externship is open to students in clinical or school psychology programs and students pursuing a master's degree in mental health counseling. Only doctoral students will be permitted to perform psychological/psychoeducational evaluations.

Preferences:

Do you provide a stipend? If so how much?: No. However, there is a LEND fellowship (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities) with a stipend that externs are eligible to apply for. Attendance at a lecture on Tuesdays 12- 1 is required for LEND fellows.

Intervention and Assessment:

Intervention training experiences offered: Estimate average number of individual patients that students will carry; estimate number of groups and other types of interventions. Offer description: Externs will carry a caseload of 4-5 treatment cases that are seen individually, twice weekly for 60 minute sessions. Psychoeducational techniques, as well as cognitive and behavioral strategies are the most commonly utilized modalities. 
Assessment training experiences commonly offered. Describe: Externs will see an assigned patient for a psychological and psychoeducational evaluation each month to gather information regarding cognitive and academic skills so as to assist with treatment and educational planning.

Context of didactics (seminars, Grand Rounds):

  • Externs will initially participate in 2 day orientation  to become familiar with the population and procedures of the unit. 
  • Externs will have the opportunity, in interested, to attend monthly CERC grand rounds (Mondays 8:30-9:30am).
  •  Additional opportunities are available to attend a weekly core lecture (Tuesdays 12:00-1:00pm) along with externs/trainees from other CERC units.  Externs can also apply for a LEND fellowship (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities) which carries a stipend.  Requirements for this fellowship are to attend the weekly Tuesday core lectures as well as to present to other LEND fellows a topic of their choosing at the end of the year.


Estimated informal open door "curbside" supervision:Approximately 1/2 hour to 1 hour/week in addition to the hour of formal supervision.  There is an open door policy; externs are welcome (and encouraged) to come by as needed. 

Describe direct supervision: Externs will have a standing supervision appointment each week.  This session will be used to discuss therapy cases as well as evaluations.  Additional supervision appointments will be provided as needed.Specify if observation occurs during intervention, assessment, consultation (audio, video, live in person (in treatment room, one-way mirror, live video stream): 

Observations take place via live supervision during treatment and evaluation sessions, as well as during feedback sessions where externs will have the opportunity to provide feedback to the patients they evaluated.
