Mount Sinai Beth Israel - Child, Adolescent and Family Externship

Provide description of Externship: Mount Sinai Beth Israel is a major metropolitan hospital serving an ethnically diverse patient population. Patients present with a broad range of psychopathology, and a wide variety of treatment modalities are made available based on patient need. Hospital's mission is to provide the highest quality care, with compassion and concern for patient well-being. Education and training are major functions of the Department of Psychiatry, with program offerings serving a variety of professional disciplines.


General information about externship siteThe Child, Adolescent and Family Externship provides an extern with experience in a psychiatric outpatient setting that specifically (a) intake evaluations of children and families, (b) individual and group psychotherapy with children and adolescents, (c) family therapy, (d) optional psychological testing, and (e) didactic experiences. The externship offers training in an eclectic approach utilizing psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and family perspectives in the context of cultural competence. Learning objectives include: to become adept at conducting individual, group and family therapy with children and adolescents; to learn to use DSM-V as applicable in the assessment of child and adolescent problems; to learn to conduct an efficient and thorough evaluation on a child or adolescent and to use this information in the development of a specific disposition and treatment plan; to integrate multi-cultural approaches to clinical work with children and families; to learn various trauma treatments; to learn to work effectively with a multi-disciplinary child/adolescent treatment team; to learn psychological testing with children and adolescents; to learn to collaborate with other care providing agencies in a child's life such as other medical providers, school, and community services; to develop a basic understanding of psychopharmacology as it relates to the treatment of child psychiatric problems; to learn how and when to make referrals to child protective services.

How many hours a week are expected of extern?: 16+

Externship is one full calendar year and begins in the first week in July & ends on the last week of June. It is a 16 hour/week commitment. Tuesday is a mandatory day (9-5). You will also be required to be in the hospital 2 other afternoons per week (2-6 approximately). It is necessary that you be able to stay until 6 pm for a few of your days since we work with children and they need appointments scheduled after school.  We can arrange the these other two days around your school schedule.

Minimum level of readiness (any prior experiences or level of training required for applicants:  The externship is most appropriate for psychology doctoral student those students at a relatively advanced stage of their clinical training (e.g. third year students, preferably fourth year students). As our population is a challenging one, we prefer applicants who have already had some clinical experience. Candidates of diverse ethnicity and Spanish speaking are especially encouraged to apply. Bilingualism is not required but it is a plus.  If you would like to conduct a psychological testing battery, some prior testing experience is necessary, including Rorschach administration and scoring.


Preferences: 3rd and 4th year students from Clinical, School, Counseling and Combined programs are encouraged to apply.

Interviews:
When do you expect to begin interviews? (Applications can be submitted no earlier than Jan 22):  We will be accepting applications from January 22, 2019 to January 25, 2019.  Please note - we will only be accepting applications for four days.   Interviews will be occurring from February 1 through February 15.

Interview process (provide information about interview process- time frame, how decisions are made) Also, do you conduct individual and/or group interviews; case presentation, other information?: Interviews will be a 1:1 interview of approximately 30 minutes. 

What application materials are required (i.e., CV, transcript, how many reference letters, case summary, test report, other?: Please send a (1) cover letter stating current interests and professional goals, (2) a personal statement, (3) your curriculum vita, (4 & 5) two letters of recommendation (preferably from people who are familiar with your clinical work), and a (6) case summary. 



Intervention and Assessment:
Typically, externs carry a case load of 4 individual patients, one family therapy case, and one group.  They also conduct intakes every other week.

Psychological testing is optional and can be provided if an extern is interested in completing one case during the year. This report will be an integrated report consisting of cognitive, achievement and personality measures.  We use the Exner scoring system for the Rorschach.
