Provide description of Externship: The extern will be working with the population of about 250 children/youth aged birth - 21 years who are in care with the NYF, and are served through the Queen's site. The NYF has a long history of providing services consistent with the specialized mental health needs of abused and neglected children living in foster homes. Many of these children come from homes in which drug abuse, domestic violence, or other forms of psycho-social stressors are prevalent. The extern is expected to conduct brief psycho-diagnostic assessments with children and caregivers as well as full, integrated psychological assessments utilizing both objective and projective instruments. The extern will carry several therapy cases, preferably reflecting a range of age, diagnosis, treatment issues, modality, etc. The extern will meet weekly with psychologist/supervisor and have other opportunities for interaction with mental health/social service/medical staff through informal and formal meetings, as permitted by extern's schedule. Extern may also participate in agency-wide trainings as appropriate and available. Extern will participate in didactic seminar, currently focusing on the learning of Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Parent Management Training (PMT).
