Description of Externship:
Affective Disorders Unit (6 North) at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital,
Westchester Division invites applications for its externship track. The
Affective Disorders Unit is a 25-bed acute inpatient unit serving adults 18
years of age and older who have primary diagnoses of major depressive and
bipolar disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the primary mode of
psychotherapy on the unit. Externs
provide skills-based interventions in both group and individual ats. Interaction with a strong interdisciplinary
treatment team is a highlight of this externship. Opportunities for treatment
of anxiety and psychotic symptoms from a CBT perspective are also available.
Trainees are expected to attend daily individual supervision and group supervision. They are also strongly encouraged to attend Psychology and Psychiatry Grand Rounds, and other training opportunities available during the year at the hospital. Attending this externship (located at the Westchester Division) will not impact students' chances of attending the Weill Cornell internship in Manhattan.
We will not interview students who are concurrently applying for internship.
For accepted applicants, prior to the externship start date, applicants must complete the following:
1) A health screening (including two PPDs) completed on theWestchester Campus prior to beginning the externship. The health screening includes drug testing.
2) Externs will need to pass a background check before starting the externship.
3) New York Presbyterian requires a completedAffiliation Agreement with each student's program. Many of the local NYC metro area schools have an existing agreement with New York Presbyterian. If there is not an existing agreement, we will work with your program to create one.
When do you expect to begin interviews? (Applications can be submitted no earlier than Jan 22):
We will accept applications between January 22nd and February 5th, 2019. Interviews for this track will take place in mid-February.
Applicants will be invited for a 30-minute interview at the Westchester campus. Applicants will meet individually with Dr. Wilkins for 30 minutes. Applicants will be asked to present cases as well as respond to sample case vignettes.

Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered: Externs willlead approximately two inpatient CBT groups per week. Externs typically schedule between 4-8 individual sessions per week. Due to the quick turnover of inpatient units, externs will have an opportunity to meet with many different patients during their externship year. There also are opportunities for conducting cognitive screening, suicidal ideation/behavior and diagnostic assessment.

Is the agency readily accessible through public transportation?: NYPH-Westchester Division is located a 5-minute cab ride or 30-minute walk from the White Plains Metro North stop. There is also a shuttle that comes from the Manhattan campus of NYP/Weill Cornell Medicine, 525 E. 68th Street (at York Ave) in the mornings (arriving on campus by 8:15) and returns to Manhattan leaving at 5 PM.
