New York-Presbyterian - Westchester Division Track 7: Inpatient CBT on The Horizon at Westchester Specialty Unit

Provide description of Externship:

The Horizon Unit (4North) at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Westchester Division is an acute inpatient unit for adults that provides a special inpatient track for Orthodox Jewish patients, designed to meet the particular cultural and religious requirements of observant individuals, in order to enhance their level of comfort during hospitalization.The Horizon Unit provides comprehensive cognitive-behavioral treatment in an inpatient setting. The patient population presents with a wide variety of psychiatric diagnoses, including severe anxiety and mood disorders, psychotic disorders, in addition to co-morbid substance use disorders, personality disorders, trauma histories, and dementia.

 

Briefly describe the activities performed by student under your guidance:    

Trainees have the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary treatment team, promoting cognitive-behavioral interventions through a variety of patient interactions. In addition, trainees are involved in conducting brief assessments (Hamilton Depression Rating Scales, Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)). The extern's core experience includes:

1. Co-leading daily CBT and DBT Groups in conjunction with the unit psychologist. In addition, trainees have the opportunity to provide brief, individual treatment to patients.

2. Attendance at morning unit rounds, daily team meetings, weekly case conference, and other didactic

opportunities throughout the hospital.

3. Opportunity to work on research projects and possibility of publication.

Additional Information:

1. We are willing to interview students concurrently applying for internship.

2. Students who extern at New York Presbyterian's Cornell sites must complete a health screening (including two PPDs) on the Westchester Campus prior to beginning the externship. The health screening includes drug testing.

3. Externs will need to pass a background check before starting the externship.

4. New York Presbyterian requires a completedAffiliation Agreement with each student's program. Many of the local NYC metro area schools have an existing agreement with New York Presbyterian. If there is not an existing agreement, we will work with your program to create one.


Interviews:
When do you expect to begin interviews? We will accept applications between January 22nd and February 5th, 2019. Interviews will take place in mid-February.

Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered:

Co-lead 2-3 CBT and DBT Groups per week in conjunction with the unit psychologist.

Conduct 2-3 brief, individual psychotherapy on an acute inpatient unit.  


Supervision:
