Scheduling

16 hrs per week, 8am-4:30pm. Specific days are individualized based on the extern's availability and the program's needs (please see website for brochure)


Minimal level of readiness

an extern must be in good standing at an APA or CPA accredited doctoral program in psychology applicants must be US citizens

Preferences

The Northport VAMC externship program adheres to the application guidelines outlined by PSYDNYS. We are happy to accept applications to our APA accredited internship program from our current and past externs. We cannot accept extern applications from individuals concurrently applying to internship.

Interview process


Application materials will be forwarded to the track supervisor(s) who may reach out to applicants for an interview. Interview dates are flexible and tend to occur throughout February. Interviews are typically held with one or two staff. Applicants may contact or request to meet with current externs. Decisions are based on applicant qualifications and goodness of fit.


Intervention and Assessment

Interventions

Opportunities for therapeutic intervention include short and long-term individual therapy, and process-oriented and psychoeducational group treatment. Couples therapy may be provided as well. Depending on the track, training in crisis intervention is available. Externs often participate in program team meetings. Depending on the track, externs may be responsible for the delivery of therapy, intakes, assessments, and/or documentation in the computerized medical record. Caseload depends on track. Workshops are offered in the implementation of: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, CBT-Depression, CBT-Insomnia, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Prolonged Exposure, and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.


Assessment training

All aspects (interview, administration, scoring, interpretation) of neuropsychological and psychodiagnostic assessment.

Supervision

Hrs/week individual supervision

1 hr minimum + direct observation

Hrs/week group supervision

1 hr in Readjustment Program and Primary Care Mental Health tracks, in addition to individual supervision. Group extern meeting with Training Director 1-2x/mo.

Hrs/week didactics

Optional EBP workshops are offered to incoming externs during the seminar. Didactics are offered Tue and Thu afternoons. Some didactics are offering on Mon afternoons.

Hrs/week co-therapy with supervisor

Varies with track and developmental needs of extern. Co-therapy opportunities are greater in group based settings.


Context of didactics

Our seminar series for the training year is developed over the summer. The Chief of Psychology alerts staff and trainees to additional educational opportunities as they arise (e.g., grand rounds, web based trainings). The VA maintains a share point that is readily accessible for training in EBPs.
