Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital

Provide description of Externship:

The Seaver Autism Center offers training opportunities for psychology doctoral students interested in gaining research and clinical experience through externships, internships, and fellowships. Psychology trainees have opportunities to participate in ongoing research and clinical activities at the Seaver Center. Trainee responsibilities include: learning and administering research standard diagnostic instruments; conducting evaluations of cognitive, behavioral and neuropsychological functioning; assisting with social skills therapy groups; participating in weekly clinical and research meetings; and additional research activities. In addition, trainees participate in workshops on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule - Second Edition (ADOS-2) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview - Revised (ADI-R) and attend didactic sessions led by local and nationally renowned clinicians working in the field. Individual therapy cases are available as well. In conjunction with assessment, externs participate in our report writing initiative which provides our research participants with clinical evaluations used by families to aid in treatment and education planning. This is an incentive for individuals to participate in research and enables us to help our community, especially those without the means to obtain a comprehensive evaluation.
