Provide description of Externship:
Our developmental training approach is designed to prepare graduate students in the field of psychology with a broad-based training experience and a thorough understanding of the role of the counseling center within a university/college setting. Practicum students are involved in all CAPS activities and provide a variety of mental health services to a diverse community of students who exhibit a wide range of clinical presentations.

Minimum level of readiness (any prior experiences or level of training required for applicants:Training experience is appropriate for 3rd or 4th year doctoral students in either Counseling or Clinical Psychology training program. Consideration will be given to 2nd year students who demonstrate clinically relevant experience.

Preferences: Successful completion of coursework in Theories of Psychotherapy and Psychopathology.

Interviews:
When do you expect to begin interviews? (Applications can be submitted no earlier than Jan 22):
Interviews will be conducted throughout the month of February 2019.

Interview process (provide information about interview process- time frame, how decisions are made) Also, do you conduct individual and/or group interviews; case presentation, other information?:  Candidates for interviews will be chosen after a thorough review of all application materials. Candidates will meet for a group interview with our clinical team and will have an opportunity to speak with current externs to ask questions about their training experiences with us.

  • Cover letter stating your interest in training at our site
  • Current curriculum vita or resume
  • Official transcript of graduate work, including courses currently underway
  • Letter of approval from the graduate program verifying readiness for the externship placement
  • Two letters of recommendation



Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered:

  • intake assessments
  • individual counseling/psychotherapy
  • group counseling/psychotherapy
  • planning and conducting psycho-educational prevention outreach activities to the campus community

 

 Estimate average number of individual patients that students will carry:One intake assessment per week, up to 8 individual therapy clients per week

 Estimate number of groups and other types of interventions:1-2 groups per week, 2-3 outreach activities per semester

Describe ect supervision: Weekly, one hour of dedicated supervision by assigned supervisor.
