Those sites are described in more detail below:
Bensonhurst Outpatient Clinic: The Psychology Externship Program at South Beach Psychiatric Center’s Bensonhurst Outpatient Department is designed to assist students in becoming familiar with the role of the psychologist. In order to do this, we provide trainees with a broad range of experiences. This is conducted with a multidisciplinary treatment team in which a team approach is emphasized. The patient population in Bensonhurst is comprised of adults from many different ethnicities, enabling students to develop the sensitivity needed to work with different populations. Externs serve as primary therapist to a caseload of 3-5 outpatient cases for individual psychotherapy. Many of these cases present with affective or anxiety disorders; externs will also gain experience working with psychotic and MICA patients. Externs will also co-lead groups. Students are welcome to co-lead an existing group, or start a new group if this group serves the patients’, as well as the student’s needs. Another aspect of the training program is performing diagnostic intake interviews. These are initially conducted with senior staff, but after becoming familiar with the process, trainees conduct them independently, receiving supervision following each interview. Psychology externs conduct 4-6 full batteries per year. Testings are comprised of full batteries, including cognitive and personality measures, with supervision sessions scheduled after each testing session. Testing results are often presented in the clinic’s testing seminar. There is a weekly seminar series for trainees. These contain credentialed staff presenting on their area of interest, students presenting therapy and testing cases, and Grand Rounds at the main hospital on Staten Island. All of the externs’ work is supervised by licensed clinical psychologists. Each student has a primary supervisor and a testing supervisor, but naturally receives supervision from variety of clinic staff in their time at the clinic.
Fort Hamilton Clinic: The Fort Hamilton Mental Health Service, an outpatient clinic of the South Beach Psychiatric Center, is located in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. We are committed to serving the mental health needs of our community by offering a full array of services to individuals who are 18 years and older. Experienced clinicians and peers offer treatment and support to individuals who suffer from a wide range of psychiatric disorders including Affective disorders (Major Depression and Bipolar Disorders), Schizophrenia and Anxiety Disorders. In addition to individual therapy and medication treatment, we offer a variety of wellness, activity and therapy groups and other services including: Mindfulness Training, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; Wellness Self-Management; Substance Abuse Treatment groups (if the substance use co-occurs with a major psychiatric disorder); Nutritional Group; Career Club; Book Club; Art Therapy; Assistance with entitlements. Our clinic also has an embedded Maimonides Medical Clinic which serves our clients' medical needs. In addition, we offer services to monolingual Chinese and Korean individuals. Externs will participate in all aspects of the clinic's program including carrying a caseload of 3-5 clients; leading or co-leading groups and doing diagnostic intake interviews and presenting their findings during an intake review meeting; possibly 1 or 2 psychological testing cases. The clinic also offers a weekly student seminar in which staff from the Ft. Hamilton Clinic and other guest speakers present in their area of interest and students will have the opportunity to present the clients with whom they are working. Externs will be supervised by licensed clinical psychologists and also have an opportunity to learn from our multi-disciplinary staff including psychiatrists, nurses and social workers.
Heights Hill Outpatient Clinic: For 16-20 hours per week, externs in this clinic will provide treatment for male and female adults with severe mental illness. Externs will gain experience with clients with a wide range of mental health problems including schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, affective disorders, personality disorders, trauma induced symptoms, and substance abuse. Many of our clients have co-morbid medical issues. Heights Hill also specializes in LGBT treatment. Working within a supportive, multidisciplinary team, externs carry a caseload of 4-6 clients, lead or co-lead a minimum of one group in our Wellness & Recovery Program, conduct intakes, participate in the Cognitive Remediation Program, and complete psychological assessments. Under close supervision, externs will be the therapist for clients on their caseloads and will provide individual psychotherapy and case management. Each extern will be assigned an individual supervisor and will also have the opportunity to work with other clinical psychologists and experienced clinicians on staff. Externs can create their own schedule provided they attend required Staff Meeting (Tues 1-2), Student Seminar (Th 1:45-2:45), and High Risk Meeting (Th 12-1). Please note the exact times of these meetings may shift. The externship runs from September through May.
Oceanview Lodge Clinic: This site is located on the grounds of South Beach Psychiatric Center. The Oceanview Lodge Outpatient Clinic training has an emphasis on working with clients recently discharged from inpatient units and residing in transitional units. Training involves individual and group experiences with severely and persistently mentally ill adults. Psychological testing is also included. Supervision is provided by or under supervision of a licensed psychologist.
Bensonhurst/Chinese Inpatient Unit: The Bensonhurst/Chinese Unit is designed to provide inpatient psychiatric treatment for both monolingual Chinese speaking clients and non-Chinese clients. Chinese patients are referred from Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, and non-Chinese patients are typically referred from Brooklyn. Some of the Chinese patients are bilingual in English as well. Every Chinese patient is assessed on admission by the bi-lingual, bi-cultural treatment team which includes a Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Social Worker, Registered Nurses, and Mental Health Therapy Aides. A comprehensive cultural and linguistic evaluation is done, in addition, so that the team can create a treatment plan based on individualized needs. The services available on the Bensonhurst/Chinese Unit include Individual and Group Therapy, Psycho-education, Psychological Testing, Family Counseling, Medication Intervention, Case Management and Discharge Planning. All treatment modalities that are provided by team members are conducted in Chinese dialects and English. Translators are available to assist non-Chinese speaking staff. Chinese speaking patients on the Bensonhurst Unit are integrated into a multicultural environment where interaction with others is encouraged. Staff members of the Chinese speaking treatment team are on site 24 hours/7days and available through all shifts for direct assistance with daily activities and ward routines. The program assists students in becoming familiar with the role of an inpatient psychologist and will be supervised by two psychologists to assist with both the Chinese and the English speaking populations. Externs will learn how to conduct the work of a primary therapist with a caseload of 2-3 patients utilizing individual psychotherapy (cognitive-behavioral as well as dynamic), group therapy (co-lead), and milieu ward interactions. Many of the cases present as affective and mood disorders, anxiety, and psychosis. Externs will conduct 3-5 full batteries of psychological testing including the WAIS-IV, MMPI-2, MCMI-III, Rorschach, Dementia Rating Scale-2, and other tests contingent upon the case question. The extern will attend the morning report and rounds meetings. The extern will also learn how to formulate, construct and write treatment plans.
