Provide description of Externship:
The externship program is designed for doctoral students in psychology who are interested in developing their clinical skills in neuropsychological assessment and building their knowledge of brain-behavior relationships. This externship is offered through the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital, which provides services to infants through a geriatric population. It is an ideal setting for externs to gain experience working with a wide variety of presenting concerns and a broad range of neuropsychological and neurological diagnoses.

Minimum level of readiness (any prior experiences or level of training required for applicants): Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited psychology doctoral program and should have completed at least a testing theory class and be able to administer the WAIS-IV and WISC-V.

Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered: Estimate average number of individual patients that students will carry; estimate number of groups and other types of interventions. Offer description: Approximately 1 neuropsychological evaluation weekly.
Assessment training experiences commonly offered. Describe: Approximately 50-65% of the externs’ time is devoted to clinical work, which consists of a combination of general outpatient services and optional rotational activities.
Adult Outpatient Service: The majority of the externs experience is through the Outpatient Neuropsychology service. Outpatients come to us from a wide range of referral sources, including physicians with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Pediatric and Adult Neurology, Developmental Pediatrics, Neurosurgery, professionals in the community, and VESID. Externs can gain further experience, if desired, in one of several areas with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.
Inpatient Rehabilitation and Brain Injury Unit: Externs can gain experience in performing bedside neurocognitive and behavioral assessments with acutely ill patients.
Developmental Neuropsychological Evaluation: Externs can observe and participated in multi-disciplinary evaluations of infants and toddlers to assess for developmental delay.
Pediatric Neuropsychology: Externs can focus a portion of their experience in pediatrics in order to develop skills in the evaluation and diagnosis of children with a wide range of conditions including epilepsy, ADHD, learning disability, and Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
