The externship requires as follows: (a) intermediate level of training in psychological assessment and experience in delivering Cognitive Behavior Therapy intervention models; (b) experience in conducting psycho-educational and psychological testing with the Weschler Scales (WPPSI-IV, WISC-V, WAIS-IV, WIAT-III) and the Woodcock Johnson-IV (COG, ACH, Oral Language) batteries; targeted are learning problems/disabilities, academic difficulties, ADHD, and co-morbidities of learning and psychological problems in children and/or adults; and (c) familiarity with scoring and interpreting some of the most typically used self-report/paper-and-pencil questionnaires for psychological assessment (e.g., CBCL, BASC-3, Conners' Rating Scales, Brown ADHD scales, Barkley ADHD scales, BDI-II, BAI, etc.).
Preferred level of readiness (any prior experiences preferred for applicants):
Two years of practicum training are preferred, as is solid theoretical knowledge of and experience in delivering CBT interventions.

Description of Externship
The overall aim of the Stony Brook University Consortium Externship Program (SBU-CEP) is to train and to educate psychology externs to practice professional psychology competently and based on a clinical scientist model. As such, the SBU-CEP is designed to provide externs with generalist training and experience in delivering psychological services across various therapeutic settings, including outpatient mental health facilities and hospital-based programs, and patient populations. Training includes experience in delivering cognitive-behavior therapy, CBT, including elements of third-wave models, behavioral medicine, and integrated care in primary care settings. Although the patient population includes primarily adults, opportunities to provide assessment and treatment services to youth, adolescent, and young adult populations are also available. Specific experiential learning opportunities are offered as follows:
1. Training in delivering evidence-based CBT interventions for general psychological problems, as well as specialized treatments for specific psychological disorders, including anxiety disorders (Exposure/Response Prevention; Mindfulness; and ACT), depressive disorders (CBT; Behavioral Activation (BA); and Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy, CBASP), obesity (CBT; ACT; Mindfulness-based interventions; and Cross-disciplinary team approaches), co-morbidity of psychological and medical problems (CBT and Mindfulness), and ADHD (Executive skills training in individual and group formats);
2. Strengthening/Broadening competencies in psychological assessment, including (a) psycho-educational evaluations for learning problems and disabilities (via the administration of the Wechsler and WJ-IV COG batteries, the WJ-IV ACH/Oral Language battery, paper-and-pencil questionnaires, and semi-structured clinical interviews); (b) psychological evaluations for ADHD and Giftedness; and (c) psychological evaluations for medical clearance (e.g., for patients who undergo bariatric surgery);
3. Training in science-practice integration (e.g., using evidence-based protocols and treatment manuals, and integrating patients' outcome ratings in treatment planning and implementation to enhance treatment effectiveness);
4. Gaining experience in behavioral medicine and integrated care approaches in medical settings (e.g., participating in an interdisciplinary medical/psychological team for the assessment and treatment of bariatric surgery and/or medical patients; providing stress-management interventions and DBT-group treatment to MB-CRC patients);
5. Gaining experience working within hospital-based psychiatry settings including the comprehensive psychiatry emergency program (CPEP) and adult inpatient unity. Experiences include conducting evaluations, providing psychoeducation and brief psychotherapy, group-based anger management and mindfulness treatments, and safety planning/crisis management work.
6. Strengthening/Broadening professional knowledge, skills and attitudes, in preparation for the doctoral internship year.
The SBU-CEP includes two-member agencies: the Leonard Krasner Psychological Center (KPC), a psychology training clinic associated with the doctoral program in clinical psychology, Department of Psychology (College of Arts and Sciences), and the Mind Clinical Research Center (MB-CRC), an outpatient facility associated with the Department of Psychiatry (Stony Brook Medicine), and associated minor programs/rotations. Both member agencies and associated minor programs are part of the Stony Brook University (SBU) system. As described above, the SBU-CEP is designed to provide externs with training and experiences in delivering services across various therapeutic settings, including outpatient mental health facilities (such as the KPC and the MB-CRC) and hospital-based programs (such as the adult inpatient unit and CPEP) in the Department of Psychiatry. Overall, several supervised practicum experiences are offered by the main externship programs at the KPC and MB-CRC, as well as their associated programs , including a "general track," a "behavioral medicine/integrated care track," and a "blended track" that includes practicum across programs.
The "general track" at the KPC includes the following training opportunities:
(1) Individual, Couple, family-based CBT for a variety of clinical problems as typically found in outpatient mental health facilities, including as follows: anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, adjustment disorders, ADHD, family conflict, occupational problems, personality disorders, and co-morbidities among these problems.
(2) Specialized training in (a) Cognitive Behavioral Analysis Systems of Psychotherapy (CBASP) for the treatment of chronic depression and interpersonal issues; and (b) Exposure/Response Prevention approaches to treating anxiety disorders
(3) Time limited skills-based group treatment for ADHD, social anxiety, academic anxiety, and social skills in lege students referred to us by the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) on campus.
(4) Psychological and Psycho-Educational assessment, including: semi-structured diagnostic interviews (e.g., MINI, K-MINI), administration of several cognitive and achievement batteries (Wechsler Scales, and Woodcock-Johnson Scales), and integrations of findings from self-report paper and pencil questionnaires for the evaluations for learning disabilities, ADHD, behavioral problems and giftedness.
The "Behavioral Medicine/Integrated Care" at the MB-CRC and associated programs includes the following training opportunities:
(1) DBT-based group treatment, training in Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and CBT based approaches for the treatment of chronic medical conditions, including trauma, stress reactions, obesity and chronic pain, and patients with co-morbid medical and psychological difficulties.

The SBU-CEP includes a combination of experiential training in the delivery of psychological services across the two main sites (KPC and MB-CRC) and associated hospital programs.
The 12-month externship will begin August 1, 2019 and end July 31, 2020. The externs are expected to carry a minimum caseload of 9 client contact hours weekly, including individual and group therapy, across the programs participating in the consortium. The content of the practicum will be tailored to each extern's level of experience and interests, as well as the current needs/patient populations of the KPC, MB-CRC, and associated programs. Additionally, the externs are expected to conduct two full-battery psycho-educational evaluations during the externship year. Each extern will have a minimum of two supervisors for their clinical work; the supervisors are members of the clinical faculty of the SBU-CEP and supervision will be conducted at the KPC, the MB-CRC, and/or associated minor programs. Additional supervisors may provide supervision as needed (e.g., as part of a specific rotation or minor program). Up to 5 externs are accepted each year for the SBU-CEP.

The theoretical orientation of SBU-CEP reflects the orientation of the clinical psychology program at the KPC and MB-CRC sites (and associated programs). Namely, the practicum program is shaped by a clinical scientist training model, and emphasizes evidence-based cognitive-behavioral approaches to the assessment and treatment of psychological disorders. The SBU-CEP clinical supervisors are very prolific clinical scientists who have also maintained a direct/active involvement in patient care. Specific therapy models include as follows: Behavior Therapy, CBT, and third-wave CBT-models, such as Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP), ACT, DBT, and Mindfulness-based behavioral treatments. Practicum training focuses on developing a strong grounding in these various approaches, and on their integration in a patient-centered (ideographic) way.
The strong commitment to integrating science and practice in our clinical training includes the adoption of evidence-based treatments and data-driven interventions. For example, both at the KPC and MB-CRC outcome data is collected on a weekly basis with the Treatment Outcome Package (TOP), an e-based platform that provides immediate outcome data to guide treatment on a weekly basis and throughout the course of treatment. Thus, externs have the opportunity to evaluate on an ongoing basis the impact of their interventions: to see what works, for whom, and why. The use of assessments is woven into a clinician's understanding, not only of what needs treatment, but how treatment might best be utilized towards optimal change.

Due to the prevalence of adult populations treated across sites/programs, the majority of the SBU-CEP practicum training is likely to be with adults. However, practicum experience with child/youth populations is available at the KPC. Additionally, the KPC offers plenty of experience in administering psycho-educational evaluations to children/youth.
