Provide description of Externship: 

This externship allows trainees to gain clinical experience at the university counseling center of one of the most diverse college campuses on the east coast. Externs spend 16 hours per week at our site conducting intake evaluations; individual, group, and couple's therapy; crisis intervention; psychological testing; and outreach to the broader campus community. Our training program utilizes an integrative psychodynamic orientation, meaning that externs receive supervision and didactic training from a primarily psychodynamic perspective while also receiving instruction in the use and integration of techniques from other types of therapy, such as CBT. Our students come from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, and their presenting difficulties run the gamut from mild adjustment disorders to psychosis and severe personality disorders. Our center has no firm session limits, so externs gain experience providing both short- and longer-term psychotherapy and are usually able to carry some of their clients throughout the academic year. Our staff is small and close-knit, and we practice an open-door policy, allowing frequent interactions between sessions. We have two externs and two interns at our site each year, so our trainees can enjoy the support and camaraderie of a training cohort. We try to have our externs have one day in common on site, usually Monday or Tuesday.

Interview process (provide information about interview process- time frame, how decisions are made) Also, do you conduct individual and/or group interviews; case presentation, other information?: Applicants are interviewed by the training director in a joint meeting with 1-2 other staff members (counseling center director and/or associate director). Applicants are interviewed separately from each other, with no group interview. Interviews include discussion of one or more cases.

Intervention and Assessment:
Intervention training experiences offered: Estimate average number of individual patients that students will carry; estimate number of groups and other types of interventions. Offer description: Externs carry a caseload of approximately 8 weekly psychotherapy clients, and they conduct intakes and crisis management sessions on an as-needed basis. Externs typically co-lead one weekly group during each academic semester.
Assessment training experiences commonly offered. Describe: Assessment clients are generally seeking evaluation of possible learning disabilities and/or ADHD. Therefore, batteries typically involve cognitive, achievement, and executive functioning tests. Some personality testing can also be conducted depending on extern and client interest.
Expected number of full assessment batteries completed during externship (defined as administration of a battery of standardized tests): Externs typically conduct one assessment battery per academic semester (2 per year). Externs who wish to gain additional testing experience can do so during the winter and summer breaks, when externship attendance is not otherwise required.
