Provide description of Externship: The client
population served by New York Foundling (NYF), Mental Health Treatment Services
ranges from birth to 23-years of age. The NYF has a long history of providing
services consistent with the specialized mental health needs of abused and
neglected children living in foster homes. Many of these children come from
homes in which drug abuse, domestic violence, or other forms of psycho-social
stress are prevalent. The extern is expected to conduct brief psycho-diagnostic
and/or developmental assessments with children and caregivers, as well as more
comprehensive psychological evaluations utilizing both objective and projective
instruments. The extern will carry 5-7 individual therapy cases, ranging in
age, presenting problems, and diagnoses; and the extern will provide
integrative treatment informed by various theories and evidence-based, as well
as trauma-focused modalities. The extern will meet weekly with their
supervising psychologist and have other opportunities for interaction with
mental health/social service/medical staff through informal and all-staff meetings, as permitted by extern's schedule. The extern may also participate in
agency-wide trainings as appropriate and available, as well as a bi-weekly didactic
seminar, currently focusing on the learning of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy (TF-CBT) and Parent Management Training (PMT).
