Provide description of Externship:
The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Center provides pro bono psychological care to veterans and their family members. The externship program at the Cohen Military Family Center is a year-long training opportunity with a focus in working with veteran families through a variety of theoretical approaches, best suited for an advanced graduate student. The extern will provide individual and couples psychotherapy to veterans and their families for a variety of presenting problems including PTSD, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, relationship stress, sleep disorders, and comorbid substance use disorders. These cases will be supervised using an integrative model based on both cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic theory, with specific training in prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, emotionally focused therapy, and STAIR available. Cases will be assigned based on the training interests of the student and the needs of the clinic. The caseload will be approximately six to eight individual and couples cases.
Additional opportunities include co-leading psychotherapy groups, involvement in outreach throughout the veteran and military community, and engaging in program evaluation activities. The extern will be invited to attend weekly case disposition meetings, case presentations, and journal clubs. There is a required weekly didactic seminar focused on teaching a variety of assessment and treatments, including but not limited to the approaches discussed above. Externs will receive a minimum of two hours face-to-face individual supervision and one hour of group supervision per week. Four extern positions will be offered.
This externship is for advanced graduate students in clinical or counseling psychology doctoral programs. Applicants must have completed two full years of psychotherapy training/supervision by the start of the externship. Externship begins in July 2019 for one calendar year. A commitment of two days per week (16-20 hours total) are required with mandatory attendance on Tuesdays.
